Accommodation in Zurich is a scarce commodity, and rents are often far in excess of what students can afford. Since it was established in 1987, the Zurich Foundation for Student Housing has been operating on behalf of the universities of Zurich, the city council and the Woko to improve the situation and make Zurich even more attractive as a centre of learning and knowledge. It currently offers a total of 1,146 affordable rooms in thirteen different properties. A further 1,000 rooms are planned over the next three years.
The HWO development, offering 497 rooms, is to be built on the Hönggerberg campus of the ETH Zurich, while a competition for a further project, run by the ETH for private investors, is currently under way, with judging set to take place in autumn 2012. Home, work and leisure are to be combined in what will be a fully-fledged urban district. A new development comprising 180 rooms opened last summer in Affoltern, not far from the campus, while further housing, comprising 332 student rooms, is under construction and will be ready for its new occupants to move in at the end of 2013.
To mark 25 years of the Foundation and its intense building activity, an exhibition at the ETH Zurich examines student accommodation at the ETH Zurich’s Hönggerberg campus and the University of Zurich campus at Irchel, presenting both existing buildings and the current
development projects.

An exhibition by the Institute gta in collaboration with the Stiftung für Studentisches Wohnen Zurich and the ETH Division for Events & Location Development
